And so begins the 2nd part of our trip |
Kom Al-Deka Roman Theatre |
Alexander The Great |
Kom Al - Shoqafa Catacombs ....... Boy !! These are really really deep. |
Pompey's Pillar - 297 A.D. |
Citadel of Qaitbay |
Mouhamed Ali |
This is a huge site !! It just goes on and on and on. There are many hillsides full of ruins & tombs which the archeologists just haven't had time to explore. |
Most of the mosaics are still in pretty good shape. This one for example has not had any restoration work done on it. |
This wall faced one of the streets in the city. Each one of those mini-pillars was a carved statue. You can still recognize some of the faces. |
If you've ever wondered how you'd look as a goddess ... just come to Libya & have a go at it. |
This is even larger than the Temple of Zeus at Olympia, Greece |
The group of black stones in the center, formed the base that held the statue of Zeus. |
Actually ... now that I think of it ... I'd rather be Zeus, than a goddess. |
The Arch of Marcus Aurelius |
Old Crusader Fort |
Once you get out of the city ... this is a common sight ( trash & all ) |
This is the archeologists concept of the layout of the city. There some speculation as to which was the bigger city ...... Leptis Magna or Ephesus in Turkey |
Entrance Arch |
The carvings on this thing are exquisite !!! |
Yep ... they had swimming pools. |
I know you know what this is !! |
This is the Market Place. Those little doorways are actually shop-keepers' stalls |
These are the arch caps for the pillars. Of course, they didn't use to sit where they're now placed. |
How about the height of those columns ? !! |
The Theatre |
The villa is a work in progress. The archeologists were busy during our visit. The place is not generally opened to outsiders, because of the extensive work going on there. What are they working on ? Restoring all the mosaics that were discovered there. This is a mosaic paradise. The only other place we've seen such marvelous works, was in Tunis. But that was in a museum ..... not in a private house such as this |
Libya was a delight ..... but it was time to move on.
Oh ... one more "treat" for you . When we went to the site museum ...... we came across this gigantic poster-board cut-out of good ol' Muammar Qaddafi. I knew you would want us to "share". |
