GREEN  FLASH   .... Yes it really does exist.  Had seen it 2 times before this ... but never managed to get the shot.

There's no way to anticipate it .... and it lasts too briefly to see it & then shoot.

You just have to wait until the sun is almost in position ..... set the camera to "sports mode" & just start shooting.

Then when you get home... delete about 130 shots.   Thank God for digital !!!

As you can see, the route to the top was only

1 vehicle wide.

right photo:

At the top,

there was a delightful picnic-park area

beyond the arch

where Roy is standing.

These are the

turtle  tracks

made by all the turtles that came

ashore this A.M.

to lay eggs.

" Came ashore ... dug my hole ... laid the eggs ... posed for photos ...now back to the sea to have fun."

The sand was soft & the water... surprisingly warm

Looks like a candidate for a horror film, doesn't he.

There was lots of beautiful sea life for viewing ...... and for catching( that's part of the Russian crew with their trophy of the day )

Now I have absolutely NO IDEA  what this guy is...... but he fit my  "suitably strange" category.

photo:  The road goes thru the center

of the caldera.

FYI:  that lava is soooo no fun to walk on.

Standing in front of the cone formed by the 1951 eruption.

The caldera is peppered with the results of eruptions that have occurred since

the original one that formed the caldera.  In back: the 1951 cone.

In front: the 2007 cone from last October

Caldera Walls .... have no idea how high they are.

Those 2 things that look like pointy black rocks ... to the right .. are huts

Yes ... there are several dwellings within the caldera.

You can get an idea of the caldera wall height from this photo.

The landscape was spectacular !!!

You can tell that

they have the same problem

with lack of rain,

that Ilha do Fogo has.

They practice "Terraced Farming" here, too.

Curvy roads snake thru the countryside ... with steep drops along the sides

Had a bit of  "bonding time" with this furry little native donkey.
