This aerial shot of the whaling station .... courtesy of the museum here ...

was taken in 1962 while the station was in full operation.

The next 2 photos were also supplied by the museum.

Ernest Shackleton

Born ... Feb.15, 1874

Died...Jan. 5, 1922

It was a very touching ceremony ...because all of us

who are addicted to

Antarctic travel

truly do consider

Shackleton to be  "The Boss"

He was buried here with

his head facing South

( towards  Antarctica )

instead of East

A quote from one of his

favorite authors

( Robert Browning )

is engraved on the back of the grave marker.

" I hold that a man

should strive to the

uttermost,

for his life's set prize"

The first 4 photos are of our  "Welcome Party"... as we waded ashore

Actually ....

I didn't even have to go in search of these

shots.

Just sat down on a rock

and let them

do all the work.

They were sort of

curious ...

so wandered on over

and

"got in my face"

on the left:

A young  "bull" seal

This was the first time on this trip that we came across the Macaronis.    Although there were some Gentoos & Kings ...

the Macaronis had the largest contingent

These young males are practicing their fighting technique  ... NOT being affectionate.    They both rear up & then just CRASH into each other.

FOUND  IT !!  Getting thru that little arch ... fighting kelp all the way

was more than a  little  "tricky"

OH  BOY  !! .... WAS IT EVER WORTH IT  !!

It certainly convinced me that  we had indeed happened upon

"The Lost World "
